A few pictures from Knit City Montreal 2025 last week.

It was a lot of work to install and deinstall all my screens, but it was really worth it to show all my animations and documentaries. Turns out I did quite a lot of moving image knitting over the last 12 years! Of course, I also had my knitted banners, samples, books and my card game Fair Isle 40 to share, so there was a little something for everyone.
I met lots of really lovely people and enthusiastic knitters over the two days, including to extremely talented and experienced textile professionals and even a few people who recalled my live knitting performance from 2023. The presence of knitting machine seemed to bring the local machine knitters out of the woodwork, and even to inspire some new people to be curious – perhaps this is a chance to gather a guild of machine knitters together in Montreal? I also found out about a few knitting machines for sale, so if you are interested, I’ve put the info here.
My friend and fellow knitter Marie Jones was a constant virtual presence as I displayed our knitting exercise video ‘Craftercise’. The soundtrack is… something. But it kept me motivated!
I especially enjoyed talking about the knitted banners that myself and Marilène Gaudet created as part of ‘On est tous un groupe d’amis ici’ back in 2015. That project was underpinned by a lot of research, but the final knitted texts are just so simlpe and fantastic. I would love to show them properly again in an exhibition here in Montreal.
